Arbroath Academy Badminton Club started their 2002-03 gents league season on Sunday evening at Carnoustie Leisure Centre. Their opponents for the season opener were Forfar. The Academy who are lucky to have such a large pool of players to choose from, needed that depth to put out a good team on Sunday when a few were unavailable. Forfar had the stalwart pairing of Ken Orrock and Dave Wilson at first pairing once again.

The Academy started the match quite strongly and kept the early lead all the way until the end. All three pairings put in fine performances with the first pairing of Les Campbell and Kevin Woolfries winning all of their games. This was a fine comeback for Les Campbell who had not played in a competitive match for a few years.

Les Campbell and Kevin Woolfries:

Beat K.Orrock and D.Wilson 15-9, 17-16
Beat K.Bell and M.Robertson 15-5, 15-7.
Beat S.Valentine and B.Young 15-3, 15-8.

Steve Bremner and Grant Cargill:

Beat K.Orrock and D.Wilson 15-6, 15-11.
Drew With K.Bell and M.Robertson 9-15, 15-12.
Drew With S.Valentine and B.Young 11-15, 15-10.

Stewart Cheyne and Robert Kirkpatrick:

Lost To K.Orrock and D.Wilson 8-15, 14-17.
Drew With K.Bell and M.Robertson 14-17, 17-14.
Drew With S.Valentine and B.Young 14-15, 15-7.

So it was a victorious beginning to the season for the Academy club. The club next play in the gents league on Sunday evening when they play Carnoustie Panbride. This is expected to be another tricky encounter.
